Blom and Battan for County Council

by lewwaters

PoliticianBallots are out and even though most already know who they will vote for, many are still undecided on who should replace outgoing county councilors, David Madore and Tom Mielke, Madore resoundingly defeated and Mielke retiring after many years in public service.

I also wish to thank all four candidates in County Council races for their running clean campaigns and not resorting to the mudslinging we see all too often in legislative races and previous County Commission campaigns.

The primary election narrowed the field to John Blom and Tanisha Harris for the District 3 and Roman Battan and Eileen Quiring for District 4. I live in District 2 so I don’t have a vote in either election since our newly implemented County Charter changed how we vote in these races as well as moving from a three person County Commission to a Five person County Council.

The Dust from the Primary Settles

by lewwaters

PoliticianWe are now 2 days past the primary election and overall, I am pleased with most results. Voters have shown their preference for who they desire to advance to the November General election.

While there are still ballots to be counted, it is unlikely any race will see much in the way of change, other than which candidate in the top two primary comes out on top, as in the race for the 17th Legislative District Senate race between Republican Lynda Wilson and former Representative, Democrat Tim Probst.

As of last evenings count, Lynda trailed by 46 votes and is expected to pass Probst today.

Clark County Council District Four

by lewwaters

Logo of Clark County

With the announcement of Tom Mielke not running for another term as Clark County Councilor for District 4, three citizens have stepped up to vie for that seat and represent citizens of Clark County as we still work out the bugs on the recently adopted Home rule Charter.

Although I have strived to remain out of campaigns the last couple elections, several people have requested I reengage in assessing candidates running for office and given the egregious behavior of District 3 incumbent Councilor Madore, both on the Council and towards me personally, I feel compelled to add my two cents in this year’s election.

I previously endorsed John Blom for District 3, having seen that the incumbent David Madore has not acted in the best interest of the County and has only sought deeper divisions as well as attempting to bully the majority of the Council from his minority status. His behavior must not be rewarded.

Given that; I will give my personal assessment of each and endorsement below.

Clark County, Time for a Mulligan on County Council

by lewwaters

Playground 1Anybody that has ever been around golf for very long knows of “taking a Mulligan.” For those unfamiliar with the term, it means “when a player gets a second chance to perform a certain move or action; usually due to lack of skill or bitter luck. A ‘Do-Over’.”

Witnessing the ongoing friction and antics of the newly seated County Council as they adjust to a five-member council, we see one of the most dysfunctional bodies of government I have ever seen in my life.

It’s easy to point fingers of blame at David Madore and let’s face it; he deserves his share of blame for his own antics, accusing others of criminal acts, corruption and plotting against citizens.

But he isn’t responsible for every last piece of dysfunction either.

And the Order of the Golden Shovel Goes To;

by lewwaters

Golden ShovelWill Rogers famously quipped, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging,” meaning of course, if you find yourself increasingly on shaky ground, especially in politics, reassess your position and approach differently.

Locally, we see County Councilor David Madore, who has announced his intent to run for reelection this year, the brunt of many negative editorials and an increasing din of public opposition.

Madore was elected by a wide margin in 2012 in hopes of seeing a much needed shift to the right in county governance. But it seems winning by such a margin went to his head and he forgot that governing is a team effort, not an authoritative one.

Clark County, We Have a Problem

by lewwaters

Yes, we all have witnessed the dysfunction ongoing with the five member County Council and finger pointing is going in all directions. But it seems the problem extends beyond just the friction between the five councilors.

It’s bad enough that the councilors can’t seem to agree on much, but week after week we see the same citizens coming forward repeating their vitriol towards one group or another.

Now That the Shoe is on the Other Foot

by lewwaters

Madore, Stuart SneeringI recall the quick animosity that developed and that we all saw very soon after David Madore was sworn in, along with Tom Mielke after the 2012 elections. We saw how for many years, Mielke was the lone voice of conservatism on the County Commission, often sidelined by the votes of Democrat Steve Stuart and Marc Boldt, allegedly a Republican.

We all grew tired of the one-sided votes and after funding candidates previously that didn’t win, Madore ran himself in the 2012 election and won.

That relegated Stuart to the lone Liberal on the County Commission and as expected that did not set well with him after so many years of calling the shots.

Will Marc Boldt “Heal Divisions,” or Widen Them?

by lewwaters

Boldt 3No doubt pleased to once again get out from behind the wheel of dump trucks, former Clark County Commissioner Marc Boldt succeeded in his bid to climb back on top on the now Clark County Council created in the 2014 voter approved Home Rule Charter that now sees a 5 member Council over the 3 member Commission that existed before.

As has been said many times now, the Charter was promoted and approved because certain elements in the county did not appreciate seeing the Democrat Rule defeated in the 2012 election as was outlined in the blog post Motive Matters followed by What Changed in Clark County? and Yes, motive for charter matters.

For whatever reason, charter opponents chose to ignore the motives and it passed by a 7 point margin, creating the 5 member Council Marc Boldt has been elected to chair, a new position created in the charter.

Her opponent, Chuck Green is to be congratulated for his efforts and for both he and Julie running clean, positive campaigns.

Congratulations to Julie Olson, our first County Councilor in the newly created District 2.

So, Now They Love Jeanne Stewart?

by lewwaters

Jeanne E. Stewart

It has long been maintained that the facebook page, Clark County Citizens for Good Governance (C3G2) is not only a hate site, set up from the failed effort to recall County Commissioners Madore & Mielke after they hired Sen. Don Benton to head the Department of Environmental Services, but a bunch of liberal hypocrites as well.

While that description certainly does not apply to every single member, some joined primarily to lurk and some are more moderate than others, it certainly applies to some of the more active members posting there daily.

Nowhere was this attitude seen better than during last year’s elections in not only advocating for a change to our county charter, but in their support of former County Commissioner, Craig Pridemore to fill the seat abandoned earlier in the year by Democrat Steve Stuart over former Vancouver City Council member, Jeanne E. Stewart after she identified herself as a Republican.

Heal the County?

by lewwaters

Doctor FrankensteinIt is well known how Liberals rely primarily on emotions and highjack words to insert in narratives designed to mask their true intent.

We see it as they proclaim “diversity” yet refuse to accept conservatives or positions advocated by conservative thinking people.

It was seen the night in 2008 when Obama first won election and a sign was hastily posted outside the Democrat Victory party at the Hilton downtown that read, “The night America came together.” Never mind the previous 8 years of constant opposition and bashing of President Bush, demeaning him in every manner imaginable.

Madore Concedes

by lewwaters

Concession might be premature: Election results back in play after many new ballots surface

Extra ballots found of no help, no change in order of candidates.

Committed to work together for our community:

The election results have stabilized. As of today, a mere 84 votes separate the top two candidates (0.03% of the 250,276 ballots mailed) and 777 votes separate 2nd and 3rd place (0.3% of the 250,276 ballots mailed).

Only the top two candidates advance to the General Election in November. That means that our existing Clark County leadership team will remain intact and will be joined by two new members in January.
