Bidding the Boy Scouts of America Goodbye

by lewwaters

Boy Scout 1As a young boy, I was really proud when I became a Cub Scout, then a Weblogs and finally a Boy Scout, rising to Life (I discovered cars & girls that occupied my attention in High School before earning my final merit badge to be an Eagle Scout), Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and enjoyed several years in the organization.

Camping, hunting, caring for the land we camped on and Patriotism are skills learned that have served me well, discipline I learned early serving me during my 8 years active duty in the U.S. Army and tours in Vietnam.

It is an organization that has taught many a young boy skills needed to go on to becoming great leaders of society.

Since its inception in 1910, the Boy Scouts have taught young boys a moral code that is seriously lacking in America today;

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
And to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
Mentally awake, and morally straight.

That simple oath has stood the test of time in teaching between right and wrong.

But as our society began shifting away from a moral society based on traditional strengths, some were discovered within the organization that never should have been and the organization was rocked by scandal as word leaked out of young boys have been sexually molested by older scouts and adult leaders.

Costing the organization in the Millions of dollars by lawsuit settlements, to preclude that happening again, homosexuals were banned from the group, their lifestyle not being compatible with the Boy Scout Oath.

But somehow, instituting that step to protect young boys became “discriminatory” as groups like the ACLU and homosexual activists launched a decade’s long battle to have the ban lifted.

Through courts, demeaning accusations by civic organizations that embraced homosexuality, the battle raged for years.

Cities banned them from using public parks they has restored and maintained free of charge when homosexuals complained about the ban.

Even the left leaning U.S. Supreme Court of the United States, agreed that they have a right to ban Gays, as they also do Atheists and Agnostics, under their “constitutional right of freedom of association and free speech under the First Amendment.” By a 5-4 vote in June of 2000, the Court overturned a lower court ruling and upheld the Scouts right to determine by their moral code, who can and cannot belong.

For several years, they stood strong, adhering to their moral code they taught me and so many others. And the assaults continued as did the ridicule and demeaning.

But they also had supporters that stood with them against the homosexual onslaught and supported their resistance and devotion to the moral code they taught for many decades.

But for some reason, ignoring all of those who have stood with them for so long, the organization has caved and has voted to lift the ban on homosexual members. It is claimed the ban on adult leaders being openly homosexual remains in place, mark my words, now that they have their foot in the door, it is only a matter of time before that ban too disappears, once again allowing homosexuals to be in positions of authority over young, impressionable boys.

It is inevitable as this the manner homosexuals have gradually come to be accepted as the normal ones, while heterosexuals are gradually being relegated toward abnormal.

Given that homosexuality is well known to be immoral as well as the health concerns associated with it and not to mention neither homosexual men or lesbians can procreate without the other sex, I see no way possible for the Boy Scout Oath to carry any meaning any longer.

It is with great sadness that I am now compelled to bid the Boy Scouts goodbye and cease any and all support I had for them.

Like many, I stood for them and they have decided to cave.

Homosexuals have succeeded in the eventual destruction of yet another traditional American Organization that has stood the test of time.

  2. As a former girl scout and sister of two boy scouts, I must respectfully disagree with this write. The Boy Scouts of America will always be the Boy Scouts. They will still do their best to do what is right and just. Of anything, this will teach the youngsters how to accept others for their differences whether it be sexual orientation, religious affiliation, physical/mental impairments or nationality. Because they have allowed gay rights to the boy scouts, doesn’t mean they’ll be making a point of it that they ARE gay.

Lew…in today’s world, children who are different are ridiculed, teased…even beaten for not being like the others. Of any thing, this should be a good life lesson of restraint and personal self worth…that everyone is different. Regarding the words of the Scout Oath…we are ALL children of God and we should all obey his words even if some do not follow the classic written words. How many of those boy scouts of yesteryear have broken this oath…have broken at least one of the Ten Commandments??? How many have tiptoed around laws for personal gain?

    Remember this…

    Matthew 7:1-3

  3. Goldie, as I said, what others if they continue supporting them do is their business. Sorry, but because others might have broken the oath doesn’t mean to me that the oath is of no use or should be discarded, but that is just me.

You might also consider looking at Romans 1:18-32

My not supporting something because of their change isn’t judgmental, any more than my not voting for someone I disagree with.

  4. Romans is a good example, Lew…the power of God in the lives of man and how precious it is, something we should not take for granted. For anybody who breaches the rules of God…it is their soul which God would decide if it’s worth saving. We all make mistakes in our lives. Remember…God is a forgiving leader.

I honestly believe this will not disrupt the good will of the Boy Scouts of America.

  5. As a former Boy Scout myself, Goldie, it isn’t the good will of the organization that concerns me, but who they will not let in and believe me, it will not end here. This is just the beginning.

  8. Not to stir anything up, but evidence of what I said will happen now that the Boy Scout Leadership caved to homosexual activists,

TWO (a pro-homosexual group) Executive Director Wayne Besen says, “Today’s Boy Scout’s decision was insulting and pandered to ignorance and bigotry at the expense of gay people and their families. Allowing gay scouts but not adult scout leaders was a compromise – only in the sense that BSA compromised its integrity and decency. Let’s be clear — this was not a step forward, but a step backward, because it reinforced the most vile stereotypes and misconceptions deliberately peddled by anti-gay activists.”

We must ask, why are homosexual activists fighting so hard to be allowed in positions of authority over young, impressionable boys?

And at the same time, silent over the anti-homosexual views of those like Islam?

  9. Lew, I have to disagree, there is a difference between a homosexual who respects the privacy of others, including boys, and a child molester. Decrying the molestation that occurred on homosexual behavior is akin to blaming rape on heterosexual behavior.

Scouting is a great program and has gone to great lengths to make certain it is safe while retaining the fun. I would ask you to take a real hard look at who committed what among the charges that were filed and documented and prosecuted. And then tell me that they were due to homosexual behavior. Nearly all of the criminal prosecutions were against parents of scouts, whose perverted acts of molestation were shows of dominance by otherwise heterosexual scouters. That is not the norm for any group I know of but Nambla. Go figure.

I firmly believe you have to take the measure of each individual, and not stain good people’s reputations with the shortcomings of others.

  10. Sane, if homosexuals, and their are some I will grant you, that really respected the privacy of others, would they have been on this decades long fight to force the Boy Scouts to open their ranks to homosexuals, especially the ongoing fight now to force them to cave to homosexual adults?

I freely acknowledge that not every homosexual is a predator nor a pedophile, but you cannot remove the male on male aspect of those that are.

Just like with heterosexuals pedophiles, there are homosexual pedophiles. And after the scandal of the 1990’s over boys being sexually molested by male leaders and older scouts, their fight to reopen their ranks today is very suspect to me.

On a similar note, since the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in the Military ranks, the largest increase category in sexual assault within the military has been male on male, but buried in reports of it.

So, they are out there and again, not all.

  11. Lew, If Being morally straight means to live your life with honesty, to be clean in your speech and actions, and to be a person of strong character, then the gay scouter who is not a pedophile would have no other choice but to fight to gain and retain admittance.
Since the repeal of Don’t ask don’t tell, do the numbers of reported acts of consensual sodomy, reflect an increase over those reported in general society or is it an aberration? (I really do not know!) However I would guess it is greater than experienced in the general civilian population because the of the age, maturity, pressures and close quarters many military outfits have is different from the general civilian population. In addition, I believe DADT was a greater curse than a cure thus the actual number of sexual assaults is driven during the time of DADT as a policy because of the increased deployment of females in combat zones and in direct combat support roles. So the increase of reported assaults of all types since the end of DADT is a phenomena that has no easy answers and no handy explanations. In my opinion DADT generally appeared to be a predator’s paradise and the repercussions of that policy will continue for the near term on our institutions and effect for the long term the veterans of that era.

I am not certain that any parallels can be honestly be drawn nor can conclusions be reached given the often murky details and motivations of individuals with such a sloppy moral compass for guidance.

I already have those reports and the ones issued couple years ago, but thanks.

Consensual acts are not reported as assaults, or even misconduct, it’s irrelevant to how many are in society as consensual, it’s legal. Forcing someone is not.

Asa Veteran who served in a combat zone, I would not want to serve with homosexuals. Stress is too high and I have seen some nefarious acts performed when people get drunk or high while overly stressed. Having homosexuals openly alongside is a distraction an if assaulted back in base camp, where it would occur, not on the battlefield, a young stressed oput soldier is very likely to ventilate their attacker.

As for homo Scouts, I too was a Scout as well a someone molested by an older homosexual when I was about 11. But tell me, how do you know whether or not they are pedophiles also until after they have molested some young boy? Remember all of the hell raised over boy scout leaders molesting boys back in the 1990’s? That is why they imposed their ban on homosexuals in the first place.

And now, the demand is to let the homosexuals back in with access to more young boys?

There are reasons discriminatory policies are in place throughout society, be it overweight enlistees, or low IQ and mentally deficient Police Officers and homosexuals in the Boy Scouts realizing their is more likelihood of a boy being molested somewhere along the line.

And any way you cut it, male on male sex is homosexual in nature.

But the Boy Scouts caved and now they are under pressure to let more homosexuals in. What they do is on them, not me.

ANd I will not support the organization ever again, although I may help individual scouts.

  13. The question of how do you know, is irrelevant, as it is in one on one situations that the act of abuse or dominance, violent or not occurs. Using the buddy system where older scouts are not left alone with younger and adults are segregated from youth sleeping arrangements unless they are family, has nearly eliminated the opportunity for abuse. The program also instills awareness in all scouting youth, so they can recognize today what was mistaken for good nature’d hazing once upon a time. At an awkward age those precautions are needed both for the safety of the boys and to ensure good leaders can function.

I fer the problem with most of the data collected by the DOD and the VA is not reflective of escalating behaviors as much as it is demonstrating an increased number of folks willing and able to report abuse and assault.
