Do You Want a ‘Functional’ County Commission?

by lewwaters

That may sound like an odd question to ask, given the angst over the Clark County Board of Commissioners since the majority switched in 2012 to a more conservative one and that Democrats have a major effort underway now to completely revamp county government in hopes of regaining their power, but it is a question that all should be considering.

As we know, Commissioner Steve Stuart decided to leave the County Commission since he no longer pulled the strings at County and Ed Barnes was named to complete his term, which ends this year.

Democrats were livid that Barnes was named, even though they nominated him, as their real effort was to propose two people they did not want in order to entice the two remaining Commissioners to name former Commissioner, Craig Pridemore to complete the term and to be able campaign as an incumbent this year.

Motive Matters

by lewwaters

“Proposed changes in county charter could be awful.” Clark County Democrat Party, May 2011

“exploring the idea of a home rule charter would be a wild goose chase, seeking to solve problems that are nonexistent.” Columbian newspaper editorial, June 3, 2013

As seen above, Democrats especially and even the Lazy C have both adamantly opposed any change to how county government functions over the years. Both led campaigns that saw efforts rejected by voters in 1982, 1997, and 2002.

Another effort received little support in 2011, leading the Lazy C to proclaim in a Cheers & Jeers column,

Cheers: To county commissioners for putting an end to the home rule charter process this year. Inspecting methods of government is always a good idea, but there was no demonstrated need to elect a slate of freeholders to, in essence, draft a county charter that would replace the current system.”

Thank You Commissioner Mielke

by lewwaters

How nice to see at last night’s C-Tran Board of Fools Meeting, Commissioner Tom Mielke continued his long standing advocacy for citizens of Clark County.

Unfortunately, it appears that Bill Ganley, Jack Burkman, Tim ‘the Liar’ Leavitt, Ron Onslow, Anne McEnerny Ogle and Ed Barnes turned their backs on the citizens and approved a Bus Rapid Transit line to run down Fourth Plain Boulevard.

Best Comment

by lewwaters

The Lazy C has long harbored a grudge against County Commissioner Tom Mielke and were quite upset when he said he did not want to see copies of the Columbian laying around at county offices. The feud, even though a somewhat soft one is well known and listening in on today’s Commissioner meeting, hearing the following exchange just cracked me up.

So, Ed Barnes Thinks He Is A “Team Player?”

by lewwaters

Ed Barnes continues his campaign of grouchiness and blasting any and everything the County Commission does, then ended his weekly tirade with;

As a retired union thug, does he not realize a “team player” works with the team and not against them? It also does not mean that he gets to call all of the shots.

But, as he says, he is intent on tying up the prosecutors office and overloading them over nothing, all driven by hate and fueled by the Lazy C on a near daily basis.

Ed Barnes Wants to be a County Commissioner?

by lewwaters

The Lazy C has reported that local loudmouth and old grouch, Ed Barnes, has thrown his hat in the ring for the nomination to replace Steve Stuart on the County Commission.

Do we really want someone with such a grouchy attitude representing us on the County Commission?

Lefty Lou’s ‘Lamentarsi’

by lewwaters

Brancaccio FiatThe latest volley between the County Commission and the Lazy C sees a continuation in editor ‘Lefty’ Lou Brancaccio’s rather boring “lamentarsi” in promoting his dumbass coffee cup campaign.

For benefit of readers, lamentarsi is Italian for “complain, moan, howl, grieve, lament or whine.”

And that is all Lefty’s weekly Press Talk columns have been reduced to for some time now as he seems to be unaware of anything happening during the week except for whatever he can cherry pick from the County Commissioner Meeting to use in hopes of promoting that really dumb cup.

Why Would Anybody Ever Vote Republican?

by lewwaters

Egg on FaceA common theme I am seeing in Democrat hopefuls for office this year is their claimed desire to tackle “dysfunction” in our political representation, ignoring that it has been their party as large contributors of “dysfunction.”

Of course, the intent is to claim that having any part of the government under a Republican majority and the rest a Democrat majority, as we see in Olympia and back in Washington D.C., makes it “dysfunctional” in such a way that Democrats are being blocked in what they wish to do.

I was preparing to do a post pointing out how it isn’t “dysfunctional” at all, but is what our founders intended, competing thoughts and ideologies coming together somewhere in middle ground to give the best compromises possible. Such a compromising attitude is what gave us our constitution after some real knock-down, drag out fighting.

Thoughts on Commissioner Stuart’s Cowardice

by lewwaters
Stuart Sneer 2

Steve Stuart

Reading comments left on County Commissioner Steve Stuart’s announcement of not seeking re-election, you would be led to think somebody real important had died. The Lazy C and supporters of Stuart’s sound more like they are eulogizing than thanking Stuart for his years sitting on the council, furthering their views, even if against the views of a majority in the county.

Stuart was first appointed to the County Commission to replace liberal Democrat Craig Pridemore, who had been elected as State Senator for the 49th legislative district. Stuart joined a Democrat majority on the three member commission along with Betty Sue Morris and Republican Marc Boldt.

His 2010 re-election would have it appear that he would be lone Democrat sitting on the commission as Republican Tom Mielke had won a narrow victory over Democrat Pam Brokaw in 2008 and Republican Marc Boldt had won re-election against Democrat & Vancouver City Council Member Jeanne Harris, but as we all saw, Boldt “moderated” his views and became more aligned with liberal Democrats in his votes with Stuart, leading to his being sanctioned by the local Republican Party and in 2012, slaughtered in his bid for re-election, losing to first time runner David Madore.

Lazy C’s Rice Tips Over the Hypocrisy Scales

by lewwaters

Col. ScalesThere is little doubt that Southwest Washington is in sore need of a newspaper, a real newspaper that actually covers news, both locally and nationally and gives an objective view in articles. The poor excuse for a “newspaper of record” currently in Southwest Washington isn’t even fit to line the bottom of a bird cage, in my opinion.

But, even with my sour view of what amounts more to an ‘unofficial daily newsletter for the Democrat Party’ than a news outlet, even I am surprised at their height of hypocrisy at times.

Such is the case with writer Stephanie Rice’s latest entry in their “All politics is local” section, Mielke’s plan for improving employee morale where she actually whines because, as she wrote, “Clark County Commissioner Tom Mielke has wielded his authority as chairman of the board to decree that the newspapers be kept out of sight.”

How Long Has the Lazy C Ignored Illegal Lot Sales by the County?

by lewwaters

Dems, BlindersQuite a shocking revelation was posted on County Commissioner David Madore’s facebook page recently. It seems that the county has been auctioning off property to unsuspecting citizens that they cannot do anything with and end up stuck with.

For all of the excessive verbiage printed by the Lazy C against the so called “M&M Boys,” Commissioners Madore and Mielke now comprising the Republican majority of the 3-person commission, I find not one mention of this practice that apparently has been ongoing for several years in Clark County.

Where we are treated to frequent denunciations of the majority voters chose in the 2012 election as well as ridicule whenever Lefty Lou Brancaccio feels like it, they remain mum on the ongoing efforts by the majority to make much needed corrections where citizens have been getting hurt for so long.

Lou Brancaccio Should Be Cleaning Toilets

by lewwaters

This was a bitter election campaign… [I]t felt like there was an opportunity to come together, to extend a hand rather than point a finger. So is there an opportunity now to stop the shouting and the name-calling, end the fist-pumping? I think so. But the window for this kind of thing is always open for only a short time. We’ll all need to take advantage of it quickly. The Columbian would love to cover a coming together.” – Lou Brancaccio, November 8, 2008

Lou Brancaccio CountYes, Lou was elated at the Democrats victory back in 2008 as were all Democrats it seemed. To watch them once they seized total control of the country, “America came together” as was expressed on a hand written sign set up outside of the Democrats Victory Party at the Vancouver Hilton that night.

Fast forward to 2013 and even though the national election was somehow in their favor, by hook or crook as the saying goes, locally Lou’s efforts to demean Republican candidates and incumbents to sway the election towards his beloved Democrats had failed. Overwhelmingly, voters throughout the county voted to elect Republicans in all but a couple races.

The Stench of the Columbian

by lewwaters

This post could alternately be titled, “If the Lazy C Ran an Objective Article, Are There Enough Readers Left to Notice?”

Columbian, No paper trailThe Lazy C, aka the Columbian that is allegedly a newspaper just continues to prove time and again that they are nothing more than an unofficial daily newsletter for the Democrat Party. Even their worthiness to use the pages a bird cage liner are questionable, considering what would be dropping on the paper would be considered more useful.

As was noted back in early August in the post “Exposé? Or Just More Hate?” and as has also been noted on Clark County Politics blog, when they hate you, they really hate you.

And I can’t think of three more people they have had nothing but abject hatred for over the years as they do Sen. Don Benton (R. 17th) as well as Clark County Commissioners Tom Mielke and David Madore.

Sly Ol’ Fox, Commissioner Mielke. Touche’

by lewwaters

Mielke Thumb UpI love seeing older people put one over on younger people from time to time, especially when the younger one doesn’t seem to realize they’ve just been had. Reading in the Lazy C’s All Politics is Local blog site that seems to be just what Clark County Commissioner Tom Mielke did at a recent Commissioner meeting.

While writer Eric Hidle focuses on Commissioners getting through a meeting without controversy, for once, he seems to have missed the significance of the not so subtle ‘in your face’ gesture offered by Commissioner Mielke.

Or, if he didn’t miss it, he is trying to ignore it.

Exposé? Or Just More Hate? Updated

by lewwaters
Senator Don Benton

Senator Don Benton

It’s a downright shame that we do not have a trustworthy or objective source of news when it comes to political matters in Southwest Washington. Instead, we have the Lazy C, more of an unofficial daily newsletter for the Democrat Party that rarely discovers scandal on the left, but gleefully reports the slightest bit of salacious claims against conservatives.

One name that frequently appears in the pages of the Lazy C connected to just about any bit of gossip that can be made to appear a scandal is 17th Legislative District Senator Don Benton, recently appointed by the County Commission to also head the County Department of the Environment.

In spite of winning his seat in the Senate 5 times in a row, a feat accomplished by few in the face of continual assault by the local media over nearly 20 years, you would be hard pressed to find much ever appearing in the pages of the Lazy C that could be considered favorable. That voters five times now have chosen Sen. Benton over the Lazy C’s more favored Democrat challenger is apparently of no concern to them down there, they only know that they want him gone and will not cease their hateful commentary until he is.

Home Foreclosures Up, County Makes Bold Move to Spur Jobs

by lewwaters

Depression 2As Democrats still smarting from the overwhelming defeat of Clark County Commissioner Marc Boldt last year bellyache at bold moves made by the conservative majority on the Commission to spur some job growth, the Lazy C runs an article informing us that home foreclosures in our County have increased 65%.

Obviously, what was tried by the former Democrat majority over the last four years was not working as more and more we see middle class families losing their homes as they cannot afford to make their mortgage payments.

The Lazy C has been trying to paint a rosy picture of our local economy for some time, telling us home values are increasing, new home building is increasing, foreclosures were down and how the County is on the mend.

When You have No Argument, Cry Victim

by lewwaters

Ron Paul CrybabyOne thing anybody with half an ounce of sense recognizes, it is the liberals propensity to always cry victim. They must be the eternal victim, even if they win and especially if they lose an election or whenever something doesn’t go their way.

We see the same attitude with the Lazy C Editor, Lou Brancaccio as his efforts to whip a large scale lynch mob mentality in the county over the County Commissioners hiring of Sen. Don Benton to head the County Department of Environmental Services basically falls flat on its face.

Brancaccio treats us to the Lazy C’s 32nd rant over the hiring by trying to proclaim nobody supports the decision of Commissioners Mielke & Madore because no one in elected office answered his call to come forward and defend the hiring.

To Brancaccio that translates to no support while ignoring that more and more elected officials are shying away from speaking with the mouthpiece on newsprint.

Lazy C Obliterates All Semblance of Impartiality

by lewwaters

“Folks should be tolerant of both (whom) they agree with and disagree with.” Lou Brancaccio

Media MeterThe above quote is found in a March 26, 2011 editorial “Keep Us Close, Very Close” where editor Lou Brancaccio is whining about people cancelling their subscriptions to the Columbian, better known as the Lazy C for their ineptness in reporting relevant truths about the Columbia River Crossing light rail project and their perverse witch hunt attitude against conservatives.

Brancaccio also said within the same editorial, “Essentially, we try not to be anybody’s friend or anybody’s enemy.”

To quote County Commissioner Steve Stuart and former Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard, BULLSHIT!

All we need do is perform a cursory look back through the archives to find strong evidence of their pro-Democrat bias and seething hatred of certain conservatives.

The Great Clark County Collusion Caper Debunked

by lewwaters

Clark County CommissionersAs we in Clark County are aware of, given we have been inundated for over a week now of article after article from the local mouthpiece hating the hiring of Don Benton to head the county department of environmental services, allegations of “collusion” have been raised in an effort to stir up citizens to support a recall of County Commissioners Tom Mielke and David Madore.

But those allegations are unfounded, they are little more than a fallacy trumped up by a few who see the overwhelming votes for both as interfering with the agenda previously seen from the County Commission and who wish to thwart the will of the county voters in changing the direction of the County Commission.

First of all, we need to establish what is meant by the term “collusion,” which means “an agreement between two or more parties, sometimes illegal and therefore secretive, to limit open competition by deceiving, misleading, or defrauding others of their legal rights, or to obtain an objective forbidden by law typically by defrauding or gaining an unfair advantage.”
