What Is This “New Clark County Conservative” Movement?

by lewwaters

Last Thursday, July 5, 2012, Mark Engleman, ‘Republican’ Precinct Committee Officer, precinct 190 sent out an email blast titled, “The New Clark County Conservative Movement – Addressing persistent misinformation” where he appears to make an effort to whitewash efforts at stacking PCO positions within the Clark County Republican Party by placing selected people in PCO slots to bring about a power shift.

First, let me assure you this effort has absolutely NOTHING to do the Clark County Conservative blogsite and judging by past comments left by Mark and others, this movement stands opposed to the positions taken and expressed by the Clark County Conservative blogsite, even though they decided to use the name of this blog in their movement.

Let there be no confusion there. This blog has been in existence and active since June 2008, just over 4 years. This “movement” came about just a couple months ago.

If Obama Is To Be Defeated, It’s Time Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul Dropped Out

by lewwaters

Seeing the results from the Republican Primaries in Alabama and Mississippi, it is obvious now that the nomination is a race between two candidates, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. That Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul remain in the race is a distraction, and only further divides an already divided party.

Not that Republicans are noted for running smart campaigns, but if both Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul dropped now, it is likely Gingrich would get behind Santorum and release his delegates to back Santorum. That would bring the projected delegate count to within 100 between Romney and Santorum.

Ron Paul’s 47 projected delegates would further close it, but let’s face it, Ron Paul supporters will stick to him, even if it means Obama is reelected.

Santorum and Romney have been showing strength in the primaries and caucuses with Romney carry 14 states and Santorum 10 including Alabama and Mississippi, Hawaii results not in at the time of this posting.

Newt Gingrich has won 2 state while Ron Paul once again, has not won a single state, often coming in dead last or close to it as he did today in Alabama and Mississippi with a 5% and 4.4% showing respectively.

Ron Paulies Rejoice: Gary Johnson Is Coming To Town

by lewwaters

Okay all of you starry eyed Ron Paul worshippers that haven’t heard yet, you have cause for rejoicing as you will soon have the opportunity to see and hear Gary Johnson, popular and well-like former governor of New Mexico and who many Libertarians feel is the “next Ron Paul.”

Johnson is slated to appear at Fort Vancouver High School, 5700 East 18th Street in Vancouver on the evening of February 5, 2010 at 6 PM for a “Training Seminar.”

If you arrive early, you may be able to participate in a “dignitary type reception” of sorts that “costs a bit more than the entry ‘suggested donation,’” as was stated to me by a self described luminary with Campaign for Liberty.

Johnson is billed as “a successful two-term governor who actually cut taxes and shrank state government” by “eliminating New Mexico’s budget deficit and reduced the number of state employees by more than 1,200” during the time he served as New Mexico’s governor, 1995 to 2003, stepping aside due to term limits.

He advocates the legalization of Marijuana and decriminalization of drugs, referring to the War on Drugs as “an expensive bust.” He does not advocate recreational drug use and strongly supports a “don’t do drugs policy,” he being a strong advocate of physical fitness, having climbed Mt. Everest in 2003 at the age of 50 and is also an “avid triathlete who runs extensively and abstains from all recreational drug use, caffeine, alcohol, and some sugar products.”

Johnson early on opposed the invasion of Iraq and now says “the mission in Afghanistan has crept away from finding Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda,” adding, “I don’t believe that our national security interests are being threatened in either location.”

In a very recent interview he said of National Security, “I believe we should pull out of [Iraq and Afghanistan] and return our focus to fighting terrorism. The focus needs to be protecting America.”

Like Paul, he advocates a “noninterventionist national security policy.”

As a Politico profile puts it, “and he shares some of [Ron Paul’s] libertarian alarmist views, but without the penchant for gold standard wonkiness.”

Johnson resisted efforts by Libertarians to draft him for a presidential run in 1999 citing his “political life will end when his second term expires in 2002.”

Johnson has now set up a website, Our America where you may purchase a signed copy of his book, “Seven Principles of Good Government” for $100.00 and another, Gary Johnson for America.

Johnson initiated a separation from his wife of 28 years, Dee in 2005, who died of “hypertensive cardiovascular disease” at the age of 54 the next year, according to an article appearing in the Santa Fe New Mexican, Feb 11, 2007.

The couple had 2 grown children, a son and a daughter.

Although some I have corresponded with see Johnson as the third coming, Ron Paul being the second, it remains to be seen if he can articulate pretty much the same message as Paul did in the 2008 election any better.

If, as Politico says, he doesn’t have the “penchant for gold standard wonkiness” that Ron Paul is noted for, he should fair much better in 2012.

Bloggers, Are We Lobbyists?

by lewwaters

washington-sealPerhaps you think that is a silly question, but currently, the Public Disclosure Commission in Washington State is conducting hearings to determine if we should be required to register and file records as lobbyists in the state of Washington.

PDC Document (pdf file)

The first hearing was held November 12, 2008. Mike Reitz, of the Evergreen Freedom Foundation has been covering this here and here.

I know that we who blog on political matters rarely agree and quite often are at extreme odds with each other, but do you think we are lobbyists?

A lobbyist is a person or group who tries to influence public officials, usually for specific groups or legislation who would gain from passing certain pieces of legislation. We seem to have a love/hate relationship with lobbyists, depending on just what official they are trying to influence on what specific piece of legislation.

While we may express our views in support of or opposition to candidates or legislation to the public who chooses to read our blogs, I do not see this as lobbying. I see it as expressing our views as we are entitled to under the First Amendment of our Constitution.

In a way, we supply Op-Eds and Letters to the Editors that escape editing by the local paper or that never get published. Often, we express a view either counter to what has been published or in support. Occasionally we speak out on a subject that should have been published, but wasn’t.

Look upon it as an Internet Soap Box in the park, but in the comfort of our homes.

Of course, we visit each other’s blogs and sometimes, engage each other, supplying lurkers with a reasoned argument, hopefully, that they will not see anywhere else. Sadly, those discussions all too often break down in ad hominem, but we do supply legitimate citizen debate and discussion without censorship, other than what we bloggers do not allow on our sites.

Should this effort by the Public Disclosure Commission succeed, I see this as a direct infringement on not only my free speech, but yours as well. I disagree with the Liberals all too often, but do not advocate their being silenced.

Bloggers, be you Liberal, Moderate or Conservative, we need to stand together on this one and protect our free speech on the Internet. Government should not be allowed to regulate us or silence us by forcing us to register as lobbyists.

Whatever your political views are, we need to flood Olympia with phone calls, letters and emails expressing our disagreement with this effort. It may very well affect all of us, should they pass it.

They meet again on December 4 to discuss this further. Join me in letting them know we will not stand for our free speech to be denied!
