It’s no secret there is a contingent of Washington Citizens wanting to prevent us from owning guns of our own. They have launched a citizen initiative, I-594 to impose the ill-thought out universal background check on us.
Watch the video below to see first hand how they are going about gathering enough signatures to get it in next years ballot. Please share this video

It seems shortly after any horrific shooting, where some crazed gunman goes on a frenzy shooting up another gun free zone, as we saw last year in Aurora, Colorado and the Newtown Elementary shootings, misguided individuals crawl out of the woodwork with their cries of “we need gun control,” “repeal the second amendment” and “pass an assault weapons ban.”
These and many more cries begin within minutes of such horrific events, receive lots of press and TV time and a lot of noise is made in Congress from self-serving politicians demanding a ban on any and everything in sight and without a clue of why there is a second amendment or that gun-free zones provide easy targets for malcontents bent on causing mayhem and death.
Eventually, the noise lessens, misguided gun grabbers crawl back into their holes, useless legislation might be passed and largely ignored and nothing really changes.
We saw this same scenario playing out after the Newtown shooting, but the noise level is increasing again as those misguided individuals are still screaming for a piece of paper with words on it, falsely believing it will protect them from the criminal element.

An unidentified 15 year-old girl speaks before a legislative body, I believe in Maryland and with a little bit of common sense, deconstructs every single strawman argument currently being promoted by gun grabbers in America.
Well done, young lady.
We must ask ourselves, how is it a 15 year-old can so easily see the fallacy of the current cries of gun-grabbers and is willing to speak out to protect her future rights, yet so many others sit back quietly and hope there are sufficient numbers of other people willing to take stand and protect our rights?

Monday, March 11, 2013: A facebook comment by Rep. Liz Pike said HB 1588 has been tabled, unable to attain the needed votes for it to pass.
As always happens after a tragic shooting, our Second Amendment right to bear arms for our own self defense comes under fire by misguided, shortsighted people who think no one should have a gun except Police and the Military.
We have successfully retained that right so far, but the anti-gun people have grown in strength and have learned to wrap their message in a manner to make it appear helpful instead of infringing on our rights.
Washington State is facing such a move with HB 1588: “AN ACT Relating to requiring universal background checks for firearms transfers.” An innocent enough sounding bill title, but a precedence setting law that would actually will do nothing to curtail criminals obtaining illegal guns.

The deadline for bill cut-off passed yesterday in Olympia, Washington meaning, if the bill did not pass out of committee, it’s dead. Seeing some of the bills that did make it out of committee, while others were allowed to, or made to die is very disconcerting. It’s as if common sense has no place in our state legislature.
Probably the most needed bill, Liz Pike’s HB 1788 that would have permitted local school districts to decide on their own if qualified, licensed and properly trained teachers would be permitted to arm themselves to defend students should a shooter access the school, bypassing several layers of security and violating every existing gun law, as happens in every school shooting, was allowed to languish, dying in committee as chairs did not even wish to discuss it.
Troubling in this is that the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Seattle Democrat Rep. Jamie Pedersen, stated that he “was not receptive to the bill.” What is troubling, if not downright hypocritical, Pederson has the right to carry a firearm inside the Capitol, concealed on his body during session as there is no effort to end the legislator’s right to defend themselves on the floor of the legislature.

“There is a terrific disadvantage in not having the abrasive quality of the press applied to you daily. Even though we never like it, and even though we wish they didn’t write it, and even though we disapprove, there isn’t any doubt that we could not do the job at all in a free society without a very, very active press.” John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States
Once was the time that we had great trust in our media to report news fairly and give us relevant information of what is happening within our cities as well as across the nation. The media was tenacious in pursuing Richard Nixon, 37th President of the United States, leading him to become the first ever President to resign the office in 1974.
Perhaps fueled by their success in that endeavor, the media of today bears little resemblance to the media we largely trusted so many years ago. The media of today seems less inclined towards reporting news fairly, especially in political news and more inclined to push an agenda favored by the leftwing politicians.
Those of us old enough to remember can recall how throughout the 1980’s the media ridiculed Ronald Reagan with Sam Donaldson coming on after televised speeches to inform of us what he “really said or meant.” George H.W. Bush was portrayed as a buffoon. And of course, the relentless assaults on George W. Bush through the 2000’s even to the point in 2004 of a fabricated memo surfacing and reported as “fake but accurate.”

Saturday February 16, 2013 saw a large crowd of over 160 people assemble at Coffee Villa in Orchards, Washington. We assembled to meet new friends, discuss pending legislation, politics or whatever came to mind. Most came armed with a gun strapped to their hip to show support for our right to “keep and bear arms” that is once again under assault as government, unwilling to give up their arms, tries to pass new laws to inhibit our right to self defense by a firearm.
I was pleased to see favorable media coverage from both KGW News in Portland as well as our own local newspaper of record, the Columbian. To be honest, coverage was much better than I expected, having seen biased coverage in the past concerning guns and favoring efforts to further restrict our right to own one.
Many may think that many armed people in a small space, standing in a long line to order and be served their coffee is a recipe for disaster. Not so, as everybody in attendance came to show those with an abnormal fear of guns that guns in the hands of private citizens is nothing to be fearful of. Everybody respected each other’s space as discussions were carried on throughout the establishment.

Once again we find ourselves preparing to have our ears tickled by Barack Obama as he speaks before both houses of congress and the nation to give the annual ‘State of the Union’ speech where he undoubtedly will speak of how well the country is doing under his tutelage and how well off citizens are, whether we actually are or not.
He is expected to cover “his plans to create jobs, tackle gun violence, and pass comprehensive immigration reform” as Nancy Pelosi, unarguably one of the worst Speakers of the House in our history, famously known for stating “we have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it” regarding Obama’s signature ‘Obamacare’ legislation, a direct contradiction of Obama’s campaign promise of a transparent government.
She also makes mention in this same email seeking support for Obama of this “ambitious agenda.”

49th Legislative District Representative, Democrat Sharon Wylie has joined with 13 other Democrats in sponsoring a bill they claim is for “Promoting firearm safety through an education program funded through fees on firearms and ammunition and creating a sales tax exemption on gun locks.”
The bill, House Bill 1703 calls for implementing taxes and fees on sales of guns and ammunition within the state citing the need to fund an “education program” designed to reduce gun deaths in Washington State.
To do this, every gun sold will have a $25 fee attached per sale and ammunition would be charged a one cent tax per round.

As always seems to happen after a horrific shooting, blame is placed on guns as gun grabbers and politicians line up to scheme of new ways to disarm law-abiding people, criminals ignoring current laws and any new ones passed (that is why we call them criminals)
But we also hear voices of sanity rising out of the sorrow. Suzanna Gratia-Hupp after losing both of her parents in the Luby’s restaurant shooting in Killeen, Texas in 1991. Darrell Scott after his daughter Rachel was gunned down in the Columbine massacre in 1999. And now, Mark Mattioli whose small son James was killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting in December 2012.
A gun is just a tool.

UPDATE: No charges will be filed against this moron “Camas Police Department said the parent’s actions did not constitute an immediate threat.”
For any who can’t understand why many of us advocate arming qualified volunteer teachers in schools, I give you the facebook outburst of one unhinged frustrated parent here in Clark County
This parent, who according to KATU News remains unidentified, was “frustrated” after a basketball game Tuesday evening between the Camas and Skyview boys teams. Police have been notified and are investigating this parent.
But in the meantime, how does a parent get so worked up over a basketball game that he publicly hopes the school gets “shot up?”

Our nation was founded on the republican ideal of guarantees of individual liberty and of constraining the power of government through a system of separation of powers, best expressed by Thomas Jefferson as “the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Republicanism emphasizes that “people are sovereign and not hereditary kings, demanded civic duty, feared corruption, and rejected any aristocracy.”
Since that founding, primarily in the last half of the 20th century we have seen a very gradual erosion of those ideals we were founded on and that served us well over the decades as politicians leaning left gained office with tactics of class envy, demonization of the opposition, ever raising of taxes to fund special projects likely funneling our money into either their pockets or the pockets of some of the very people they demonize with their class envy.
While this is readily seen across the spectrum, two areas will be my focus here, areas of concern for us locally that threaten our way of life and ability to secure our right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” the Columbia River Crossing project and our second amendment right to bear arms.

The Constitution of the United States of America is one of the most remarkable documents ever written. It clearly and in plain language lays out the foundation of our nation, the makeup of our government and establishes the rights of our citizens along with the limitations of government.
It has served our nation well in our short history and guided us into becoming the super power we have been known as, along with being the freest nation on the planet a long as we have abided by it and followed the basic tenets of it.
But government wishes to grow and assume powers our country was founded to get away from, putting the limits on citizens and granting more powers to government denied it when we adhere to our Constitution.

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Benjamin Franklin 1759
Over the years we have all heard the above quote or a disambiguation of it, usually from the anti-war crowd, twisting it to mean if we submit to any measure for security, we are not deserving of liberty.
What they and many others did not do, though, was to research the quote and its context. Had any done just a little research they would have discovered Ben Franklin was addressing those who would not accept one of the guns he purchased to help protect what was then the frontier from marauders and murderers.
“Those Who Would Give Up A Little Liberty To Gain A Little Security”
Sadly we are once again facing the claim of if we just give up a little bit of our liberty, that being our rights under the second amendment to bear arms freely, we can be safer and our children less likely to be slaughtered in schools or even on the streets in drive-by gang shootings.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

It is now being reported that Barack Obama will surround himself with children when he announces his proposals to curb gun violence. While the proposals are expected to be controversial, using children as props seems to be a common theme with certain leaders of the past.

Once again we see people deeply divided over the issue of gun control and our second amendment rights following a maniac committing mass murder in a school of young children. Some blame the gun while others blame the shooter and our mental health care system as both sides dig their feet in to promote their perceived solution.
As the rancor increases, bills are introduced by the droves in state legislatures and at the federal level, letters are written to newspapers, online forums light up with varying views and even face to face discussions occur, many heated and all too often, misrepresenting, misinterpreting or misunderstanding the opposing view.
Case in point, a video put out by the City of Newark, New Jersey featuring their Mayor, Cory Booker offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of someone carrying a gun within the city.
