15 Reasons Another Assault Weapons Ban is a Wasted Effort

by lewwaters

AR-15America has seen another tragic incident where a madman has stolen legal weapons, forced his way into an elementary school and murdered 28 people, 20 of them small children. That he took his own life is of little consolation, having saved the state the effort.

As expected, the gun used now receives all blame as all across America, gun-hating politicians once again push for another “Assault Weapons Ban” as the previous such ban expired in 2004. That such a ban did nothing to prevent such murderous events is completely ignored.

Politicians imposed an “Assault Weapons Ban” in September 1994 with a 10 year sunshine clause, allowing it to expire in September 2004. During the time of that ban, we saw the following happen,

15 mass shootings while so-called “Assault Weapons” were banned, 13 of them in our schools and this does not include thousands of other murders committed by other means.

Here in Washington State, we see a new push to ban “Semi-Automatic” Weapons by 3 gun-hating Democrats, spewing such rhetoric as “If they’re used in the army, used in the war — that’s what this ban is about,” by Ralph Fascitelli, the board president of Washington Ceasefire.

Fascitelli seems to be echoing a similar uninformed sentence uttered by Barack Obama in the second presidential debate this past October where in the midst of one of his extensive answers he stated, “weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don’t belong on our streets.”

Apparently, neither realizes that unless obtained illegally, stolen or procured on the black market, such weapons ARE NOT ON OUR STREETS! Why? Because they are ALREADY BANNED! Citizens cannot legally obtain the same weapons used by our Military, those are fully automatic, meaning as long as the trigger is held down, they continue to fire until you empty the magazine.

What citizens are able to have is a semi-automatic that LOOKS similar, but will only fire once for each pull on the trigger. They function no different than any hunting rifle.

Mossberg, Legal & Illegal

Referring back to the 15 incidents during the previous Assault Weapons Ban, you’ll notice that in the majority, the weapon used would not fall under such a ban.

What we see is the usual knee-jerk reaction of people with an unfounded fear or hatred of guns, always seeking to disarm innocent people and not realizing that since criminals already ignore all laws, there is no reason to expect they will heed a new one. They will just see more easy targets.

In the examples given above, in at least 2 the shooters were stopped and held for Police by others who also were armed. Pearl, Mississippi saw the vice-principal retrieve a gun from his truck and hold the shooter as he was heading off to another school to do more harm. The Appalachian Law School shooter was apprehended by 3 students, at two that were armed.

But gun-haters oppose training and arming qualified personnel in schools. They falsely believe do so places school children in more harm instead of protecting them.

To that I can only answer, if training and arming qualified school staff will not protect school children, then how does arming secret service agents protect Barack Obama’s children, who have armed body guards wherever they go? And they are not necessarily armed with single shot weapons, but fully automatic weapons in some cases.

Are his children somehow more important than yours?

We would do far better addressing the mental health of people than disarming innocent citizens and leaving them easy prey to whatever criminal element roams our towns.

It is time we turned our focus to where the problem really lies, mental health and not the NRA who teaches and advocates gun safety.

My friend in the Northwest, Lew Waters.
This is a really good blog folks.

  2. Over 56 million dead people in history of guns when their respective governments banned weapons from the populous. All at the hands of their government. That folks is 56 million more reasons to NOT ban guns in the United States of America home of the free and land of the brave.

  3. I’m beginning to think that we should reinstate the military draft. It seems to me that the only people who really understand the value of our constitutional rights have a military background. My best friend served in Vietnam, Lew Waters served in Vietnam, and the author of the above post is a Navy Veteran. Whenever there is a question of the Bill of Rights, something that liberals are keen to destroy, it seems that the first (and sometimes only) people to defend it are veterans.

Once again it appears that liberals are using a tragic event to advance their agenda. Gun restrictions simply don’t work. They know that, but it doesn’t matter to them as long as they can get people to believe that restrictions will make a difference. I don’t understand how they can believe that criminals will obey any of the laws they write. The only people who will follow their laws are people who are law-abiding in the first place. How does that stop someone from stealing a gun and committing an atrocious act? It doesn’t. Obviously. That leads me to believe that all the liberal talk of respecting the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners is a lie. In order to keep the lawless from acquiring weapons, they would have to seize and destroy all weapons everywhere – except for their own of course. I think that’s their real agenda.

To go along with my other post on the shooting and how the gun is not the problem. Here is evidence that a ban would not have the effect that politicians and news media outlets are implying that it would have. It would not stop the shootings.

  5. I myself am not a conservative, but I do agree with you. In fact, before having read this, I previously did not know that there was a ban, and it didn’t do shit, further validating that gun laws don’t do a whole damn lot. You know, Norway, China, and the UK have some of the strictest gun laws around, and that didn’t stop tragedies from happening there. In fact, in the UK, only criminals have guns, to my knowledge. I hear even the police there don’t have guns. So the people there are powerless to defend themselves. And I fear the worst should a tyrant take the helm there.

  6. After banning guns in England, criminals began using knives. As expected, the call changed to banning knives.

China has a seen a large increase in knife attacks over the last 2 years against small children in schools.

Liberal or conservative, we all have the same right to self defense our founders outlined for us.

Israel and Thailand arm their teachers. How many schools have you heard of being attacked in those countries?

  7. You seem to me as a good and honourable man.

Now that you mention knives, I have heard of knife stories plenty of times on British news (I should know, I happen to live and be born there, though I’ve got me an American accent and consider myself American in spirit). British papers rabble nonstop about guns in America, with The Sun (not the best source of news in the country) ranting “END THE LUNACY”, which panders to sentiment, not reason or justice. News sources all over are trying so hard to take away responsibility from the killer (who disgracefully evaded justice), and shifting it to, not just guns, but his parents and even video games like Call of Duty. Sounds to me like a bad sign.

I’ve not heard of how it goes in Israel and Thailand, so I can’t say.

  8. The saddest day I have had in a while was yesterday when LaPierre had his senile say. I didn’t hope to hear anything more than he would get behind efforts to deal with mental problems. That the criminally insane and others had no business with or around fire arms. That didn’t happen, he treated it as just another attempt to take peoples guns away.
There are so many things he could do to get people off the gun owners back, such as the saftey features offered by any number of trigger locks that only allow the authorized owner to fire the weapon. If you do not have the commonsense to govern the use of your weapon off the firing line you have no business with it on the line.

  9. David, LaPierre said,

“The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters — people so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can possibly ever comprehend them. They walk among us every day. And does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn’t planning his attack on a school he’s already identified at this very moment?

How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame — from a national media machine that rewards them with the wall-to-wall attention and sense of identity that they crave — while provoking others to try to make their mark?

A dozen more killers? A hundred? More? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation’s refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?

And the fact is, that wouldn’t even begin to address the much larger and more lethal criminal class: Killers, robbers, rapists and drug gang members who have spread like cancer in every community in this country. Meanwhile, federal gun prosecutions have decreased by 40% — to the lowest levels in a decade.

So now, due to a declining willingness to prosecute dangerous criminals, violent crime is increasing again for the first time in 19 years! Add another hurricane, terrorist attack or some other natural or man-made disaster, and you’ve got a recipe for a national nightmare of violence and victimization.

The attacks against the NRA began within minutes of the Sandy Hook shooting. Had he come out right away, they would have spun it even worse than they have already.

But I have to ask, when you say, “There are so many things he could do to get people off the gun owners back,” what have you done to ensure you retain your right to bear arms? Why place it all on the back of the NRA? Yes, they take the lead, but each of us has to fight in this battle as well. Write letters to the editors of your local paper, write and call state and federal legislators, talk to people you know about the safety of guns, proper use, self defense and more.

If we always expect others to take the heat and we just enjoy the benefits, we will lose both the benefit and our rights.

  10. Make sure people know something seriously fishy this way comes…

  11. “The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters — And most of the disgusting bastards hold a political office of some sort.
